The reason why I decided to watch Passport to Love is this movie is about Love. I like to watch it on Valentine’s Day, with my lovely wife. Sound romantic, right?
But Passport to Love is going to be another pain in the ass of Vietnam movies. I don’t know what is the message of Victor Vu? But if I guess, all he want to tell us is: “Vietnamese are so cheap”. I hate to write something like that, but I have to write them down, because this stupid director.
Well, back to the movie, the movie is about a geek who has a dream to be Vietnam’s Bill Gates. He has a good friend, but a play boy. He also has an eight-years girl friend who always care for him and his mother. The story starts when this geek win a scholarship. This is the chance for him to go US to make his dream come true. And so weird, the play-boy-but-a-good-friend also has his ticket to US.
I really don’t understand what were Victor Vu thinking, but his movie was telling an unreality story. It said this geek could drink a cup of coffee every 45 minutes. It said this geek is a fan of Bill Gates, and put a large picture of Gates in this geek’s room. What are these for? Do we have to be freaky like that to become a geek? To me, the man who drinks a cup of coffee every 45 minutes while he was working is not normal. How can he sleep after then? Is he someone like Edward Cullen?
The concept of the movie is everything can change. The geek was charmed by a beautiful girl, he lost his concentrate, and also his faith upon his dream. His friend, the play boy, was charmed by a girl (she is also a cop), and found out the real values of his life. Yeah, this is the idea of the genius Victor Vu: “These two guys were changed by girls”. He forced his characters to be like that.
Why I said “forced”, because this was not natural to tell you a geek was tamed on a whore, even how beautiful she is. If this geek crushed on one of his class-mate, who helps him a lot in his big and innovation project, this is natural. In the movie, this geek – a guy who didn’t know how to ride a car – rode a girl (How amazing!) to his home (why his home?), and then fucked her. What the hell is it?
The play boy, he changed. After that, he married the girl he loved. What is it mean? They always say that Vietnamese guy “go-one, back-three”. I wonder is Victor Vu trying to prove this shit is true. If not, why was thing go that way? Why didn’t the play boy graduates his degree, rises his career first, and then marries the girl? Why must this six months story ends by a wedding? I really don’t know why?
Hey Victor Vu, you must learn about Vietnamese before you make a movie about us. Yes, we are poor but we aren’t cheap. We might have some crazy dreams but we are trying to make these dreams come true by our own knowledges. Of course, we have some play boys and girls out there, but these play boys and girls are not all of us. Our traditional value is still alive, no matter what lies that your movie tried to tell. We are not cheap, because we aren’t the people on your movie. The people who are chasing sex, money, title on you movie aren’t us. Let try to live with this truth. Maybe this can help you, the ant, can climb out of the bow. Let do it now!
Can’t agree more. Poor and trying not to be cheap.
I dont know why but just cant stop laughing!
Love your write-style …
Thanks for your review.
It’s just a movie. Why can’t you enjoy it for what it is. Why do you have to ask why about everything? Do you believe every movie you see? You over analyze the movie and take the funny out of “comedy.”
Hi Tim,
What happen with your keyboard? All the letters of your comment was in uppercase?
I don’t want to reply your comment, but I approved it. That means all your “lowercase” comments will be approved automatically in the future. See? I respect you, my guest.
Thanks for comment on my English.

It’s a great movie to watch. Good comedy. I like all the characters. One of the best Viet movies I have ever seen. I see lots of improvements. This movie is much better than any other movies those have Tri Nguyen & Ngo Thanh Van. This movie is a must see!
Please try to read over what you have written before posting it for others to see. You have totally misinterpreted Victor Vu’s message with “Passport to Love”. The purpose of the movie was not to reinstate that Vietnamese people are cheap. Did you come to that conclusion from reading the English subtitles or from listening to the Vietnamese dialogues? It appears that you have a problem with the English language; no offense but that’s the truth. Please work on your grammar, syntax, and diction. Thanks.
Hi Trang,
Thanks for your comment about my English. I am trying to fix it everyday.
Victor Vu must be proud because his black comedy has a fan like you.

Ban,
People have the freedom to express their opinions; however, when the purpose of those “opinions” is to mislead others, then I have a problem with that.
I will say that “Passport To Love” is not 100% perfect. I’ll list a few flaws for you. Ngoc Diep (Jennifer) needs to work on her acting. The scene where Khang dreams of being rescued by Tiffany is so disappointing; if not totally fake due to the bad props, scenery, and lighting. Jennifer’s improvement in mastering Vietnamese is quite unrealistic as well. She changes from not being able to speak the language to reading literature in a few months.
However, even with all those flaws, the movie is still enjoyable. Someone who’s incapable of thinking outside the box will say that the movie is cheap. Hieu, leaving his eight-year relationship with Thao for a relationship with Jennifer. Hm…correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m assuming there’s a reason as to why the names of those two characters are “Hieu” and “Thao”. You remember the dilemma of choosing between chu hieu and chu tinh, don’t you? If you have five minutes to spare, think hard and decide whether or not that was one of the themes in the movie. And what about the theme of “minh tinh khong bang Troi tinh?”
I don’t know when the last time you visited Viet Nam or how often you read the news concerning Viet Nam. But I can tell you this, Bill Gates is considered one of the world’s greatest heroes/geniuses in Viet Nam. Viet Nam is very “loyal” when it comes to brand names; therefore, Yahoo, Microsoft, Toyota, etc. are more than well known in Viet Nam. As a matter of fact, Bill Gates had visited Viet Nam before and university students there idolize him. Therefore, Hieu is not a freaky geek with a big picture of Bill Gates in his room. Hieu is just simple one of the many normal university students in Viet Nam (f their major happens to be engineering, computer science, or anything relating to math and science). Oh and by the way, Thao refills Hieu’s cup/glass of coffee every 45 minutes. Refilling in this case is different from refilling a prescription; here it happens when the present volume of coffee is different from the original volume. Just because Thao refills it every 45 minutes, it does not mean that she refills the coffee with the same volume each time or that Hieu always finishes the coffee before Thao refills it again. That was the writer(s) of the script way of telling us how “chu dao” Thao is when it comes to her fiance, Hieu.
I don’t mind if you have your own opinions about the movie, but if you’re going to make big statements about it then I prefer you to back those up with facts…not with your distorted interpretations and questionable emotions. Do I need to write about Binh Minh’s character in order to emphasize my point?
@Trang: Oh man, you seem very excited about the topic and I’m sure that you are really “rảnh” huh?
@anhThu: I agree with you . I think there’s nothing in this topic,It’s only a personal opinion. Every thing “personal” may be wrong.
Trang :Are you angry ? control your anger.what happen if someone provoke you.
author : srry man, i have no idea.
