Halo, today is the first working day of the year 2009, and I read this blog post: Google tells users to drop IE6. I am so agree with them. From now on, all my personal projects, consist of my freelance projects and all self-projects, will not support for IE6.
Last week, on my HTML/CSS training course to my company trainees, I realized that IE6 is too old to suite my need. IE6 don’t understand my Selectors, my pseudo classes. Huh, I thought, how can I build my Web application without CSS 2.0 support?. Is it the time for me to leave IE6 behind?
Of course, I know that there are about 25% to 40% internet users still using IE6 to surf the Web. But thing are changed by Fire Fox, Chrome, Safari, Opera and even IE7+. They all support W3C Web Standards. They all have a good render engine to render our typeface as what we need it to be. They all fast and save our computer resources… They all have what IE don’t. Sorry my 25% to 40% internet users who using IE6, ’cause I need to move on. If you want to join, install Firefox, upgrade your IE6 to its higher versions. Please don’t blame me because I don’t want to fall behind, like you.
It’s time (for me) to drop IE6.
Im hate IE6 too, but what happens if your customers ask for their products must be supported on IE6?
It is up to the money they can pay me to live (or to fight) with the pain of IE6.
What about: it’s time to drop IE? Just kidding, I know the browser war is such a pain in the ass for web developers but for users, it’s like heaven
He he, I have something to say about IE6 several month ago as well http://pcdinh.googlepages.com/ie6
Hi Dinh,
Thanks for come and leave your note.
This is a very good resource for me!
It’s absolutely the web developers’ dream if users let IE6 RIP. However, there’s still 19% of web browser in this world is IE6. (http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_stats.asp).
I think we have to debug for another few years.
Yeah. same with me and I agree (Hate sleeping after 4.30 in the morning), IE6, is a pain with css and Transparent graphics. But I’ve also come across a problem in IE7
involving css with image swapping and visibility, at least its not worst than IE6.
TUNG, When I first started as a web developer i hated using flash, just for the sake of letting people who dont have flash installed on there computer to be able to view a web page, things have changed over the last few years, That using flash on a blog or web site has become the thing (Like Fashion). I regret it (now im way behind on flash, and its taking a hell of a time just to catch up). When there is a sacrifice to be made we have no choice.
we cant change water to wine, now that IE8 is in beta. we all have our own ways and need to be ready for its final release, and being outdated is not something to be gambling with. IE7 has been out for like three years now, I strongly believe people will move on, looking at the numbers IE6 is dropping in numbers. Eventually its the hall of fame and shame for it.
I totally agree, we need to ban IE6. I’m currently looking for a good script that will tell visitors on my site who are using IE6 that my site does not support IE6 and will suggest to update to IE7.
